Disciplines: Childbearing (CB), Newborn Care (N), Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the preterm birth epidemic and related problems in health disparities in maternal-infant health worldwide.
  • Discuss the goals of the UCSF Preterm Birth Initiative, other global initiatives and the role of nursing.
  • Identify one aspect of maternal-infant health where participants can contribute to making a positive, population-level impact on newborn and family outcomes.

  • Submission Description:
The US has been a world leader in innovative perinatal and neonatal care and yet in many parts of the country deep disparities exist in access, quality of care and outcomes for pregnant women and newborn infants. In this session, Dr. Franck will share lessons from the planning year of the UCSF Preterm Birth Initiative, a multi-year, transdisciplinary research effort to reduce the burden of preterm birth, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates and Marc and Lynn Benioff foundations. Researchers, clinicians and community advocates at UCSF and partner institutions are bringing innovative ideas and approaches to address the epidemic of preterm birth, which is the number one killer of newborns around the world. Are you ready to join the movement?
