Deborah J. Schafer, MSN, RNC-OB , Women and Children Services, PinnacleHealth System, Harrisburg, PA

Discipline: Obstetric (OB)

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the potential impact of telemedicine in optimizing maternal and neonatal outcomes.
  • Identify effective educational strategies to enhance the delivery of safe care for patients delivering babies in the emergency room setting.
  • Identify equipment and technology to enhance the delivery of safe care for patients delivering babies in the emergency room setting.

  • Submission Description:
PinnacleHealth System, a multi-hospital facility in central Pennsylvania delivers over 4,000 babies a year. However, maternity services are available in just one facility. Recently, a telemedicine collaboration program with Obstetrics and Neonatology and was put into place to assist the Emergency Departments without on-site Labor and Delivery. The goal of implementation was to offer guidance and support to nurses and physicians during these stressful situations, until transfer of mom and baby can occur.
