Urmeka T Jefferson, PhD, RN , Sinclair School of Nursing, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO
Tina L Bloom, PhD, MPH, RN , Sinclair School of Nursing, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO

Discipline: Obstetric (OB), Neonatal (N), Women’s Health (WH)

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify disparities in breastfeeding.
  • Identify factors impacting African American women's breastfeeding behavior.
  • Discuss implications for practice to improve breastfeeding outcomes for African American women.

  • Submission Description:
There is a significant racial disparity in breastfeeding rates with African American women less likely to breastfeed than other women. This presentation describes factors impacting African American women’s breastfeeding behavior, including infant feeding exposures, experiences, and beliefs. Findings from this study provide implications for culturally sensitive practice to reduce race-based breastfeeding disparities and improve health outcomes for African American infants.
