Wednesday, June 15, 2016 : 10:00 AM

Title: I6A - Postpartum Education: Are We Meeting Mothers' Needs and Expectations?

Texas C (Gaylord Grapevine)
Deborah McCarter-Spaulding, PhD, RN, WHNP-BC, IBCLC , The Moms Place, Catholic Medical Center, Manchester, NH
Becky Spencer, PhD, RN, IBCLC , Department of Nursing, Texas Women's University, Denton, TX

Discipline: Obstetric (OB)

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe mothers’ experiences in the early postpartum period.
  • Identify key areas where priorities of mothers and nurses may be in conflict
  • Consider alternative strategies for postpartum education that meet mothers’ emotional and physical self-care needs.

  • Submission Description:
Very little research exists regarding the transition to motherhood particularly as it is experienced in the first few days postpartum. Mothers who participated in a qualitative portion of a mixed methods study identified a major disconnection between women’s perceived needs and the standard discharge education priorities and activities of postpartum nurses. Descriptions of women’s experiences postpartum and their perception of the discharge education received will be presented.
