A4 - State Improvements in Newborn Screening Pre-Analytic Processes and Developing Educational Modules to Support Timely Newborn Screening

The Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children (ACHDNC) recommends that newborn screening (NBS) dried blood spots be collected at 24 – 48 hours of life, and that specimens should be received at the Laboratory within 24 hours of collection. A 2014 nation-wide survey of NBS programs found that many programs struggle to meet these recommendations. We present examples from select states that have made improvements in their pre-analytic newborn screening processes.
