Title: PC1 - Depression in New Mothers: Causes, Consequences, and Treatment Options

Learning Objectives:
  • I. Describe the three components of the stress response and the impact of the immune system on mothers’ mental health
  • II. Identify the factors that contribute to inflammation in new mothers
  • III. Describe the role of breastfeeding and standard treatments for depression in lowering inflammation and downregulating the stress response

  • Submission Description:
    Depression in new mothers is a common complication of childbearing that can lead to serious consequences for mother and baby. Drawing from research in the field of psychoneuroimmunology, this presentation will demonstrate the role of stress and the inflammatory response system in depression, the role of breastfeeding in protecting maternal mental health, and the many treatment options that are available for mothers.
