Depression in new mothers is a common complication of childbearing that can lead to serious consequences for mother and baby. Drawing from research in the field of psychoneuroimmunology, this presentation will demonstrate the role of stress and the inflammatory response system in depression, the role of breastfeeding in protecting maternal mental health, and the many treatment options that are available for mothers.
