A4 - Drugstore Pharmacology: A Walk down the Drugstore Aisle

The typical drugstore offers consumers a daunting array of over the counter. pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and herbal remedies. At the same time, we’re bombarded with dire warnings about OTC and prescription drug interactions, cold and cough medicines in children and adults with hypertension, and accidental overdoses of such seemingly benign medications as acetaminophen. This session will “walk” participants down the drugstore aisle, examining the effectiveness of such commonly found preparations as Echinacea, and reviewing indications, contraindications, and proper use of widely used products such as antihistamines, decongestants, analgesics, laxatives and anti-yeast therapies. Have the right answer the next time your patient, mother, neighbor or hairdresser asks you what she should take to get rid of her vaginal itch, stuffy nose and premenstrual headache.
