This presentation describes a performance improvement initiative in the antepartum population located in a metropolitan academic regional medical center, which achieved a reduction in length of stay and standard deviation, resulting in a savings of greater than 650 patient days and greater than $500,000 savings in direct variable costs. The Medical Director for Obstetrical Services and Perinatal Outreach Manager led an interdisciplinary team, using data analysis to determine the source of length of stay outliers in the antepartum population. Consensus evidence based practice guidelines, a preterm labor evaluation algorithm, inpatient order sets and interdisciplinary education were the initial tools used to implement change. Tips on data analysis, implementation steps and key contributors to success for clinical care improvement are described.
