Hall A (San Diego Convention Center)
Northwest Community Hospital has approximately 3000 deliveries per year with a breastfeeding initiation rate of 90%. The clientele is a mix of clinic patients with very little prenatal breastfeeding information to very highly educated professionals who are very knowledgeable with birth plans. While our initiation rate is higher then that recommended by the WHO code, our exclusive breastfeeding rate was about 25%. In order to improve this number we had to identify the reasons and create effective ways to educate our staff through evidence based practice on how they can best support mother’s decision to breastfeed.
Lactation support post discharge was readily available both at the hospital and by private lactation consultans, therefore we needed to close the gap between prenatal and postnatal support of the breastfeeding mother. We designed and used creative games and interaction to make the learning fun for the staff and at the same time empower the patients to make informed choices.
