The Mercy Perinatal Recovery Network (PRN) is a non-profit program that provides alcohol and drug recovery services for pregnant and recently delivered women in the Sacramento , California area. The program, established in 1997, exceeds nationally set standards for the ninety-day program completion rate. National standards average 30-35% completion of ninety program days, PRN averages 72%. This success rate is attributed to the programs gender specific and responsive treatment needs. The program meets three primary barriers to abstinence in the perinatal population: childcare, transportation, and cost. In response to a gap in services identified from reviewing the recovery research, the program began offering cafeteria style services approximately 18 months ago. These cafeteria style services provide an opportunity to surmount the secondary barriers to abstinence in the perinatal population: self-esteem, literacy, consequences of past decisions, lack of life skills, and dysfunctional relationships. The program includes a morning session which targets drug and alcohol recovery counseling. The cafeteria style services are offered in the afternoon, which include classes and one-on-one counseling sessions. Each client receives services based on individual needs determined by the recovery counselors. Classes aid in overcoming barriers as well as meeting the mind-body-spirit needs of the client. These services help make the necessary connections to their new lifestyle of abstinence. Outcome data since inception of the cafeteria style services is being compiled and will be available soon.
