Abduction is a serious threat affecting families, staff, hospitals and the community. The Joint Commission and The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children call for a management plan that addresses infant/child security. Since care is provided in multiple departments throughout the hospital, a successful system-wide adduction, missing or runaway prevention and response program is critical. An innovative infant and child security program was developed to achieve the highest level of safety possible. Descriptions of this program includes the following components: 1) identification of settings and relevant risks to infants and children, 2) educational needs of staff, patients and families, and 3) implementation and use of system-wide security system. In addition, system-wide multidisciplinary evaluation strategies of the program and lessons learned will be addressed.
