Kernicterus is usually a preventable condition, but unrecognized and untreated severe hyperbilirubinemia can cause irreversible brain injury. A panel will discuss a systematic approach for reducing the incidence of kernicterus that includes implementation of universal bilirubin screening in the newborn nursery.
