Maternity care has shifted from childbirth as a normal physiologic event to one that “treats” labor and birth as surgical events to be controlled, manipulated and interrupted at will in the context of uncontrolled healthcare liability. These dramatic healthcare shifts have substantially and continuously increased the cost of care, failed to improve outcomes for mother or infant, and increased short- and long-term morbidity. Are healthcare reform initiatives the window of opportunity for fundamental change?
