Meeting the nutritional demands of the preterm, late-preterm and term newborn is a major nursing activity. Current evidence supports the relationship between adequate neonatal nutrition and long term health outcomes. A major obstacle in meeting these nutritional demands is resolving feeding performance issues. Evolving research also suggests potentially best practices to facilitate successful breastfeeding and bottle feeding strategies for these infants. This presentation will provide an overview of the nutritional needs, developmental competencies, short and long term concerns and feeding strategies for each of these infant populations.
