Title: F8 - When the Fetus Is Alive but the Mother Is Dead: Somatic Support of the Brain Dead Woman

  1. Review history of keeping brain dead pregnant women on life support.
  2. Review ethical principles determining the benefit and burden of keeping the woman on life support to grow the fetus.
  3. Review optimal team work for nurses working in adult ICU, obstetrics, the operating room, and neonatal intensive care.
Submission Description:
Advances in technology have allowed brain dead patients to be kept on life support for purposes of organ donation. This presentation examines keeping a pregnant brain dead woman alive to grow the fetus to viability.
