Learning Objectives:
- Describe the mental illnesses that women are at greatest risk for during the perinatal period.
- Critically assess and evaluate clusters of symptoms indicating most prevalent mental illnesses among women during the perinatal period.
- Explore the nurse's role in the provision of care to women with mental illness during the perinatal period.
Mental illness affects over 44 million Americans and represents 4 of the 10 leading causes of disability. Too often mental illness goes unrecognized and untreated. The perinatal period offers a unique opportunity to screen & intervene.
