Title: F6 - Clinical Information System (CIS) Implementation: Tips and Tricks

Learning Objectives:
- Identify CIS project management principles as they apply to the implementation phase of a perinatal clinical information system.
- Discuss the pros and cons of 4 implementation approaches. • Big bang approach • Parallel implementation • Phased in approach • Pilot approach
- Discuss tips and tricks of the following as they pertain to perinatal information system implementation: • Risk management issues • Product customization and unit workflow • User training and support
As the US moves toward a personal health record, knowledge and application of CIS project management principles is essential when implementing a clinical information system. The pros and cons of each implementation approach (the big bang, parallel and phased) will be discussed, focusing on assessing unit/service workflow and the unique needs of staff in perinatal settings. Tips and tricks involving risk management, product customization and user training and support will also be considered.
