Learning Objectives:
- Describe how an electronic personal health record can improve healthcare communication.
- Discuss ethical issues regarding the use of an electronic personal health record.
- Identify the nurse’s role in practice with the electronic personal health record.
This session describes the electronic personal health record (PHR); a file of health information that is held by the individual. Content includes current tools individuals can use to create, manage and exchange their own health information. Examples highlight health information specific to perinatal and women’s health. National communication structures for health information exchange are outlined. Ethical issues including privacy and security are introduced for discussion. The session concludes with implications for nursing practice.
