Title: G4 - Evolutionary Care for Full-Term Newborns - The Neuro-Endocrine Connection

Disciplines: Newborn (NB), Childbearing (CB), Advanced Practice (AP)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Discuss neuro-endrocrine processes occurring during labor, birth and the immediate postpartum.
  2. Describe how mothers and newborns are mutual care givers.
  3. Describe ways to encourage changes in practice to enhance mother and newborn adaptation to life as a dyad.
Submission Description:
Neuro-endocrine processes which begin during labor, birth and the early postpartum significantly influence the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding as well as attachment and future social competencies. Understanding the state of the science related to maternal and neonatal adaptation and mutual caregiving is foundational to practices changes needed to provide the best evolutionary appropriate care to mothers and their newborns.
