Title: D4 - Demystifying DIC: Anticipatory Nursing Care of the Pregnant Woman with Disseminated Intravascular Coagulopathy

Disciplines: Childbearing (CB)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Review and diagram normal hemostasis.
  2. Describe which obstetrical situations may place a pregnant woman at higher risk for developing DIC.
  3. Detect a diagnosis of DIC from clinical and laboratory findings.
Submission Description:
Disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC) is a life-threatening complication that occurs in the OB/GYN clinical setting. Quick interpretation of hematologic labs is imperative to identify the woman in DIC and to start interventions for stabilization as early as possible. Nurses who are comfortable with the advanced skills of hematologic laboratory interpretation are key in promoting an efficient response.
