Title: B1 - Cooling and Beyond: Update On the Use of Hypothermia to Ameliorate Brain Damage Associated with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy
Disciplines: Advanced Practice (AP)
Learning Objectives:
- Distinguish the newborn with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy from the larger group of encephalopathic infants and be able to predict who may benefit from post- natal cooling.
- Quote the outcome data from infants with HIE treated with and without cooling.
- Delineate the advantages and disadvantages of the two modes of cooling as well as the new pharmacologic approaches to ameliorating brain injury in the perinatal period.
This presentation will discuss the diagnostic criteria for hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), review the evidence describing the benefits of cooling and present the hemodynamics, metabolic derangements, and pharmacological alterations associated with cooling and rewarming.
