Title: E8 - Neonatal Withdrawal From the "New Methadone" and Prescription Opiates: NAS Scoring Pointers and Pitfalls
Disciplines: Newborn (NB), Advanced Practice (AP)
Learning Objectives:
- Differentiate variation in neonatal withdrawal from prenatal exposure to oxycodone and hydrocodone versus buprenorphine and methadone.
- Describe variations in pharmacologic therapies for the newborn experiencing withdrawal from opiates.
- Discuss reliable, consistent, and objective nursing assessment of neonatal abstinence syndrome utilizing definitions for scorers.
This workshop will reexamine and navigate the Finnegan Neonatal Abstinence Score following a clear “GPS” (guiding practice statements system) that promotes consistency and reliability among colleagues. Participants will discover the varying withdrawal patterns from prenatal exposure to opiates versus the "new" methadone (buprenorphine), grasping data on newer pharmacotherapies for withdrawal. In addition, participants will explore creative nursing interventions and methods of parent interaction that facilitate a calmer and more controlled neonatal withdrawal.
