Title: F1 - Hot Topic: Vaginal Birth After Cesarean – Current Trends, Barriers and Recommendations
Disciplines: Childbearing (CB), Advanced Practice (AP)
Learning Objectives:
- Identify current trends/rates in cesarean birth and vaginal birth after cesarean.
- Discuss at least 3 barriers in the current obstetrical environment that restrict the availability of a trial of labor or vaginal birth after cesarean.
- Outline the current recommendations for obstetrical practice related to trial of labor and vaginal birth after cesarean.
The total cesarean birth rate is at an all time high in the United States. Part of this increase is associated with a decline in availability and practice of allowing women the choice of a trial of labor and attempt at vaginal birth following a previous cesarean. This presentation will summarize the findings from the March 2010 NIH Consensus Development Conference. Current trends, identified barriers and recommendations will be presented.
