Title: F1 - Hot Topic: Vaginal Birth After Cesarean – Current Trends, Barriers and Recommendations

Disciplines: Childbearing (CB), Advanced Practice (AP)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify current trends/rates in cesarean birth and vaginal birth after cesarean.
  2. Discuss at least 3 barriers in the current obstetrical environment that restrict the availability of a trial of labor or vaginal birth after cesarean.
  3. Outline the current recommendations for obstetrical practice related to trial of labor and vaginal birth after cesarean.
Submission Description:
The total cesarean birth rate is at an all time high in the United States. Part of this increase is associated with a decline in availability and practice of allowing women the choice of a trial of labor and attempt at vaginal birth following a previous cesarean. This presentation will summarize the findings from the March 2010 NIH Consensus Development Conference. Current trends, identified barriers and recommendations will be presented.
