  1. Discuss the evolution of labor support from the dawn of mankind until the 21st century.
  2. Discuss the importance of labor support and related effects on the childbirth experience.
  3. Discuss the implications for future intrapartum supportive care in view of current cultural changes in the birth environment.
Submission Description:
Childbirth within the hospital is again facing a significant cultural change related to new Joint Commission standards for cesarean and elective inductions, and hospitals' interest in achieving Magnet status. How will these changes affect intrapartum nurses? What administrative adjustments will be needed to provide supportive care in the labor and delivery setting? This presentation will examine the past, present and future of supportive care during childbirth.
