PC5 - The Art of Communicating Under Duress: A Focus On Fetal Heart Monitoring
Disciplines: Professional Issues (PI), Childbearing (CB)
Learning Objectives:
- Identify four essential teamwork practices.
- Demonstrate ability to use effective strategies to communicate complex fetal monitoring data with appropriate urgency.
- Analyze common sources of communication breakdown related to fetal heart monitoring.
The ability to communicate effectively across disciplines is a critical skill for any obstetric clinician. When obstetrical harm occurs it is usually related to poor communication, failure to plan, or poor team dynamics. Effective teamwork related to fetal heart rate monitoring demands perinatal caregivers be as proficient in communication skills as they are in clinical skills. This interactive case-based workshop will challenge participants to more effectively incorporate team behaviors into clinical practice, respond more rapidly to risk, and create a healthier, safer and more satisfying work environment.
