PC6 - Achieving Implementation of Staffing Guidelines In the Perinatal and Newborn Setting

Disciplines: Professional Issues (PI), Newborn Care (NB), Childbearing (CB)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Review supportive evidence for the AWHONN staffing guidelines.
  2. List associated professional standards and guidelines from other national organizations and their relationship to perinatal staffing.
  3. Discuss implementation strategies.
Submission Description:
In September 2010, AWHONN released the first updated perinatal nurse staffing guidelines that reflect the many changes in perinatal settings since 1983. The target audience for this interactive session is all nurses who are seeking additional information about the guidelines and those who wish to contribute to staffing improvements on their units. Learn how and why the staffing guidelines were developed, explore the research that links staffing and improved patient outcomes and understand the benefits and challenges of implementation of the guidelines. Small group break out sessions will facilitate strategizing by attendees working in similar settings related to managing increased costs, maximizing utilization of current staff, and planning realistic timelines for implementing improvements that can lead to more effective staffing and quality patient care.
