F7 - Necrotizing Enterocolitis: Preventive Strategies

Disciplines: Newborn Care (NB), Advanced Practice (AP)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe the multifactorial pathophysiology leading to NEC
  2. Describe the clinical features, management and outcomes of NEC
  3. Discuss the role of human milk, probiotics and feeding regimens as strategies to prevent development of NEC
Submission Description:
Neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common intestinal emergency in the preterm infant. It is an overwhelming gastrointestinal illness. It is not a disease from a single etiology but rather is an “end stage intestinal pathology” which may have derived from any one of several initial insults. This lecture will review NEC, its pathogenesis, presentation, and management, with a focus on preventative strategies.
