PC8 - Medications for Women throughout Their Lifespan

Learning Objectives:
- Discuss regulation of different types of drugs including the relationship to safety and efficacy.
- Describe how various factors influence the action of drugs.
- Discuss new drugs, new indications, withdrawal and future of drugs used by women during their lifespans.
Today's use of pharmaceuticals will be addressed including how safety and efficacy of prescriptive and over-the-counter agents are assured (or not assured), with fewer medications being added to the marketplace than removed. Chronobiology and other state of the science topics will be discussed. Changes in use of drugs for common concerns among women will be included, especially new evidence-based indications for medications and supplements such as vitamin D and folate. Life stages of women (pregnancy, lactation, menopause) and use of pharmaceuticals will be addressed specifically. Expanding on the future of designer drugs and pharmacogenomics will provide a glimpse into the next decade.
