Deadly Delivery: The Maternal Health Care Crisis In the USA
Disciplines: Professional Issues (PI), Childbearing (CB)
Learning Objectives:
- Explore barriers women face in accessing high-quality evidence-based obstetric care.
- Describe the optimal role of state maternal review boards.
- Summarize current legislative initiatives aimed at reducing maternal mortality in the US.
Women in the US face a greater risk of maternal mortality than women in 49 other countries - just one indicator suggesting the numerous barriers that women face in accessing high quality, comprehensive, woman-centered care. New legislative and policy initiatives are being developed to help to improve the quality and experience of maternal care. The talk will provide an overview of current legislative initiatives, and specifically will address the work of state maternal mortality review boards. It will also address why improving maternal care is not just a matter of clinical care and public health, but a human rights issue.
