Title: F5 - Hooked On AROM – Are You Practicing Evidence-Based Care?

Disciplines: Professional Issues (PI), Childbearing (CB), Advanced Practice (AP)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Discuss the evidence-based practice recommendations for not routinely artificially rupturing the membranes during the physiologic labor process.
  2. Identify interventions nurses can implement to decrease the use of artificial rupture of membranes (AROM) in their practice settings, and how these interventions can increase quality outcomes.
  3. Develop a strategy for approaching obstetric providers with the evidence to potentially decrease the use of AROM in your practice setting.
Submission Description:
Nurses are frequently asked to participate in interventions during the birthing process which may not be evidence-based. Artificial rupture of membranes (AROM) is commonly implemented by providers based on the belief that it will shorten the first stage of labor. Evidence-based practice guidelines show that AROM does not shorten labor, increase maternal satisfaction, or improve newborn outcomes. Research and practice guidelines will be examined and attendees will learn how to advocate for evidence-based obstetric care.
