Title: B6 - Biological Nurturing: Breastfeeding Initiation Reconsidered

Disciplines: Newborn Care (N), Childbearing (CB), Advanced Practice (AP)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify the clinical and research evidence for Biological Nurturing (BN).
  2. Examine the four components of BN and their implications for clinical practice.
  3. Discuss how to apply the mechanisms of BN to optimize breastfeeding initiation.
Submission Description:
Are you discouraged about how often our current strategies to support breastfeeding initiation do not work? Biological Nurturing (BN) is a term for a range of mother-baby states and positions whose interactions release innate behaviors that are optimal for initiation of breastfeeding. This session explores the clinical and research evidence to support BN, examines each component of BN, and offers ideas for incorporating BN into your practice setting.
