Learning Objectives:
- Describe the Institute of Medicine recommendations for prenatal weight gain.
- Identify the risk of prenatal obesity and excessive prenatal weight gain.
- Apply clinical strategies to preventing excessive prenatal weight gain.
Obesity and excessive weight gain in pregnancy increase the risk of numerous maternal and newborn complications. This presentation will include the current Institute of Medicine guidelines for weight gain in pregnancy and the available evidence of how to optimize prenatal weight gain. Specific strategies for clinicians will be reviewed.
