Title: C1 - Secrets, Scars, Shame: Self-Injurious Behavior During Pregnancy and Childbearing Years

Disciplines: Women’s Health (WH), Childbearing (CB), Advanced Practice (AP)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Discuss definition of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), and prevalence among women in childbearing years and pregnancy.
  2. Identify assessment and interventional strategies when caring for individuals experiencing NSSI.
  3. Describe affordable self-injury prevention programs based on current evidence-based literature.
Submission Description:
The majority of individuals who self-injure are women, beginning during adolescence with injurious behaviors peaking during the childbearing years of 16-25. Clinical guidelines are established to guide practitioners in caring for patients with mental health issues during antenatal and postnatal periods. However, these guidelines do not discuss treating and identifying self-injurious behaviors and there remains a paucity of research related to self-injury in pregnancy.
