Title: C2 - Childbirth In the United States: Can It Be Changed?
Disciplines: Professional Issues (PI), Childbearing (CB)
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the reasons for the increase in preterm and cesarean delivery.
- List five interventions that promote normal, physiologic birth.
- Explain how a checklist can be used in the clinical setting to promote normal birth.
The increase in both cesarean and preterm delivery in the United States during the past two decades is cause for concern. Interventions in labor and delivery can either promote normal physiologic birth or increase the incidence of cesarean and preterm delivery. This presentation focuses on those practices which promote physiologic birth, describes the evidence base that supports those practices, and suggests the use of a checklist to change hospital culture in labor and delivery.
