Title: SS12 - Leadership Staffing Summit: Ensuring Effective and Efficient Perinatal Staffing
Disciplines: Professional Issues (PI)
Learning Objectives:
- Use principle-based staffing, findings of current nurse staffing research and the lived experiences of other attendees to formulate top priorities to improve your perinatal staffing.
- Describe how effectively tracking your institution’s perinatal staffing in relation to patient volume, acuity, procedures, interventions and obstetric and nursing practice can impact outcomes.
- Identify essential components of effective acuity tools for perinatal and neonatal units.
The target audience for this interactive session is nurses in leadership positions with key budgetary responsibilities and all nurses who wish to contribute to staffing improvements on their units. This session will increase your understanding of: 1) what principle-based staffing means for your setting 2) how current nurse staffing research applies to perinatal patients; 3) the findings of AWHONN’s national perinatal nurse staffing data collaborative and how they are relevant to what is happening in your setting; 4) how you can improve staffing through careful tracking and evaluation of patient volume, acuity, procedures, interventions and obstetric and nursing practices; 5) how successful QI efforts on perinatal units have improved efficiency and staffing demands and 6) the medical/legal implications of inadequate staffing
Case studies will provide examples of how perinatal nurses are improving their care and staffing through using data and building tools that address important process and outcomes variables. Small group breakout sessions will facilitate strategizing by attendees related to developing acuity tools useful in each perinatal and neonatal area.
Registration for the Leadership Staffing Summit is held in conjunction with the 2012 AWHONN Convention registration. If you are registering for the convention you may add the Staffing Summit on the events page. If you are not registering for convention please choose "Staffing Summit Only" as your registration type.
