Learning Objectives:
- Analyze the beliefs and values of women and their families who choose homebirth and the providers who care for them.
- Explore strategies for developing a safety net within the community.
- Delineate methods for mitigating the challenges of intrapartum or postpartum maternal-infant transfers.
The purpose of this session is to consider the sometimes difficult and contentious reality of homebirth in the context of traditional inpatient maternity care. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the women who choose homebirth, the providers who care for them, and how nurses can support women who choose homebirth and work more collaboratively with homebirth providers. Strategies for developing a safety net within the community and its healthcare systems will be explored.
