Disciplines: Advanced Practice (AP), Childbearing (CB), Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Discuss the impact of cardiac disease upon pregnancy related death in the United States.
  2. Describe the physiologic changes of pregnancy that predispose the woman with cardiac disease to adverse outcome.
  3. Utilize a template that elicits appropriate interventions for cardiac abnormalities during the intrapartum period and the immediately after birth.
Submission Description:
Although cardiac disease during pregnancy is uncommon, the percentage of pregnancy-related deaths attributable to cardiovascular disease, in particular cardiomyopathy, has increased in the United States. During pregnancy, there are significant physiologic demands that predispose the woman to adverse outcome. A practical guide for implementing an interdisciplinary plan of care for the woman with cardiac disease is provided in order to optimize communication between healthcare providers and select appropriate interventions during pregnancy, birth, and after birth.
