Learning Objectives:
- Describe the anatomic and physiologic differences between adult, newborn and premature infant skin.
- Discuss current research about how newborn skin becomes colonized with microorganisms and the diversiity of the skin microbiome in infancy.
- Review current research and clinical practice recommendations for newborn skin assessment, bathing, disinfectants, medical adhesives and diaper dermatitis.
This presentation will include the current state of the science regarding neonatal skin care. New information about the colonization of the skin, called the microbiome, is becoming known due to DNA technology. Recent research in the areas of bathing, medical adhesives and diaper dermatitis will be presented.
