G5 - Impact of Asthma on Maternal-Fetal Outcomes

Title: G5 - Impact of Asthma on Maternal-Fetal Outcomes

Disciplines: Childbearing (CB), Newborn Care (N), Women’s Health (WH)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Recognize key assessment findings in pregnant females with asthma.
  2. Identify the effects pregnancy has on asthma and asthma has on pregnancy.
  3. Describe potential maternal-fetal implications of asthma.
Submission Description:
Asthma in females presents unique challenges to both the mother and the fetus. Prior to and during pregnancy, females often discontinue asthma medications to minimize fetal exposure to steroids and beta-agonists. This not uncommon behavior places both the mother and the infant at risk for adverse outcomes.
