Learning Objectives:
  • Identify the significant risks of the occurrence of a retained surgical item after a vaginal delivery
  • Establish the culture of team communication and surgical count vigilance throughout the vaginal delivery
  • Implement a rigorous and standardized count process during the vaginal delivery

  • Submission Description:
Retained surgical items (RSIs), in vaginal deliveries, remain a patient safety concern in perinatal nursing. RSIs pose a significant risk to both postpartum physical and psychological morbidity. In an effort to eliminate this risk, vigilance of the perioperative standardized count processes and culture of enhanced team communication must also exist in the vaginal delivery room.
