Learning Objectives:
  • 1. State the impact of decreasing primary cesarean section rates.
  • 2. Discuss the importance of forming a collaborative team, including leadership, nursing and providers to impact a decrease in primary cesarean section delivery rates.
  • 3. Discuss best practice initiatives when caring for the laboring patient to prevent the primary cesarean section.

  • Submission Description:
The incorporation of a collaborative effort to prevent the primary cesarean section brought procedural changes in the obstetrical area of a community hospital. Hard stop guidelines were implemented to prevent the early elective induction of labor, education provided to nurses on labor techniques for managing the stages of labor and the use of innovative equipment to optimize patient outcomes. Implementation of these initiatives positively impacted primary cesarean delivery rates in the obstetrical area.
