Learning Objectives:
  • to understand the background of the study including cultural myths and misconceptions about breast cancer
  • to understand the needs of conducting culturally sensitive health promotional activities to promote women health among the ethnic minority groups
  • understand the objective, content, and activities of the health promotional project and discuss the merit of such project

  • Submission Description:
Ethnic minority women are less educated and most of them are housewives and submissive to their husbands. Traditional custom and cultural beliefs are major barriers for breast cancer screening. We have conducted a service project tailored for this ethnic minority women group (Indians, Nepalese and Pakistanis) to raise their awareness and knowledge of breast cancer preventive measures currently available for them. The project engaged nursing students and South Asian women ambassadors as volunteer workers.

The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
