Discipline: Childbearing (CB), Newborn Care (N)

Learning Objectives:
  • Discuss factors that influence breastfeeding duration for Hispanic mothers
  • Describe how a computer adapted education support program can help promote sustained breastfeeding
  • Explain how the predicting and changing behavior theory applies to all aspects of breastfeeding support

  • Submission Description:
The feasibility of using a bilingual, interactive computer-based breastfeeding support program is the focus of this presentation. Focus groups, the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale Short Form, and the revised Breastfeeding Attrition Prediction Tool were used to identify factors that impact breastfeeding practices among rural Hispanic women. This information guided the development of a computer-based breastfeeding education program. Usability assessments determined that the prototype was accepted and participants were able to navigate through the program with ease.
