Discipline: Childbearing (CB), Women’s Health (WH)

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the process used to develop dosage and antibiotic administration guidelines
  • Discuss the evidence supporting the use of a chlorhexidine/alcohol preparation
  • Discuss the importance of collaborating with other health professionals to implement an evidence-based practice project

  • Submission Description:
We noted a slight increase in the rate of surgical site infections indicating that examination of our current practice was needed. Broad variations in timing and dosing of pre-operative antibiotics, or whether any were administered were discovered. To reduce surgical site infections, we established evidence-based guidelines for the selection of antibiotics, with weight-based dosing and timing of administration, and selection and standardized use of an intraoperative surgical skin preparation.
