Discipline: Childbearing (CB), Women’s Health (WH)

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the results of a nursing research study measuring the effectiveness of an educational intervention for PPD provided during the maternity hospitalization.
  • Identify the most significant variables in identifying women at risk for PPD during the maternity hospitalization.
  • Consider nursing interventions focused on ensuring adequate and appropriate follow-up after discharge for at-risk mothers

  • Submission Description:
Nurses provide support, education and anticipatory guidance about postpartum depression (PPD) during maternity hospitalization. Research was conducted to determine the effectiveness of an educational intervention about PPD in the reduction of symptoms at 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after discharge, as compared to usual care provided. Results suggest that education during the maternity hospitalization may not be adequate and further study is needed to determine effective nursing interventions for women at risk.
