Learning Objectives:
  • By the end of this session, the participant will be able to discuss the importance of postpartum readiness for discharge.
  • By the end of this session, the participant will be able to summarize how a conceptual framework adapted from transitions theory can be useful for conceptualizing and investigating the transition home after hospital.
  • By the end of this session, the participant will be able to explain patient/family education implications on post-discharge coping difficulty.

  • Submission Description:
    Hospital discharge from postpartum before a mother is physically and/or psychologically ready, can lead to adverse outcomes. Research suggests that the quality of discharge teaching may influence postpartum readiness for discharge, however few studies have analyzed factors related to the quality of discharge teaching and readiness for discharge. Predictors of the quality of discharge teaching, discharge readiness, and post-discharge outcomes will be disseminated assisting nurses in implementing appropriate strategies to promote optimal outcomes.
