  • Appreciate the importance of accurately identifying LEP patients and the challenges associated with collecting, reporting and communicating LEP status.
  • Learn about the Lean Six Sigma DMAIC process and tools utilized to improve the delivery of care to LEP patients.
  • Describe how poor communication contributes towards health disparities and identify improvement strategies to advance the use of qualified medical interpreters and promote an understanding of culturally sensitive care.

  • Submission Description:
    Limited English Proficiency (LEP) creates challenges for effective communication that impacts health outcomes and inadvertently contributes to health disparities. A survey of postpartum women found 41% of LEP patients reported an unmet need for an interpreter and wide use of unqualified interpreters. This project improved identification of LEP patients and use of qualified medical interpreters (MI), achieving a 75% reduction in patients reporting an unmet need for a qualified MI during their hospitalization.
