Title: F4 - Preventing PPD: A Novel Paradigm Using Infant Calming and Sleep Promotion to Mitigate Postpartum Mood Disorder

Disciplines: Childbearing (CB), Newborn Care (N), Women’s Health (WH)

Learning Objectives:
  • Participants will be able to discuss the evidence that infant crying and maternal exhaustion are key triggers of postpartum depression.
  • Participants will be able to explain the “calming reflex.”
  • Participants will be able to correctly perform 5 techniques (the “5 S's”) that activate the "calming reflex."

  • Submission Description:
Infant crying and parental exhaustion are key challenges to new parents, especially those with premature babies. These stressors are proven triggers for multiple serious postnatal problems, including marital stress, shaken baby syndrome, unsafe sleeping practices…and postpartum depression. An evidence-based paradigm will be presented that has been shown to reduce fussing and promote sleep. This innovative approach is taught in hospitals, military bases and health clinics across America.
