Title: E2 - The Multi-System Organ Effects of Severe Preeclampsia and HELLP Syndrome: Case Studies

Disciplines: Childbearing (CB)

Learning Objectives:
  • Review pathophysiology and clinical presentation of severe preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome.
  • Interpret patient care data presented from selected case studies
  • Critique clinical management of selected obstetric case studies using critical thinking concepts and based on pathophysiology of severe preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome

  • Submission Description:
Complications from severe preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome are a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. Because these complications often effect multiple organ systems, the woman may present with a variety of complaints and symptoms leading to a wide range of differential diagnoses, unnecessary testing, and mismanagement. Pathophysiology of severe preeclampsia, symptoms of complications, assessment parameters, and management concepts will be reviewed and illustrated in case studies.
