Title: Prevent the Plunge: Using Nursing Pillows to Prevent Newborn Falls

Longhorn Hall D (Gaylord Grapevine)
Cyndy Krening, MS, RNC-OB, C-EFM , Women's & Infant's Services, Saint Joseph Hospital, Denver, CO
Sarah E. Smith, MSN, RNC , Saint Joseph Hospital, Denver, CO

Discipline: Obstetric (OB), Neonatal (N)

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify 3 risk factors for newborn falls in the postpartum period.
  • Discuss 2 education strategies employed in an effort to eliminate newborn falls.
  • Describe the use of a nursing pillow to prevent newborn falls, and the incidence of falls since implementation.

  • Submission Description:
This poster will describe an innovative program to tackle the ongoing issue of newborn falls. When family and staff education failed to reduce newborn falls, hospital grade nursing pillows were supplied in each postpartum room. Patients are educated to use pillows consistently while feeding and handling their newborn. There have been no newborn falls since implementation!
